Essays and Portraits

Rewriting Russian Gymnastics:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0QML36dtVg&feature=related

Maria Filatova: Russian Sparrow Made in the USSR

Maria Filatova – the first ever picture taken of her doing gymnastics!

By kind permission of Maria Filatova Kourbatova

My first memory of Maria Filatova is a little girl with huge, white ribbons in her hair, so tiny she seemed to have to stand on tiptoe to be able to see over the balance beam.  At 4’ 6” tall, she was the smallest competitor at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, yet she was already part of the Soviet senior team, competing alongside such established stars as Ludmilla Tourischeva, Nelli Kim, Elvira Saadi and Olga Korbut.  The ‘Siberian Sparrow’, trained in Leninsk-Kuznetsk by Innokenty Mametyev since a very early age, celebrated her 15th birthday on the 19th July 1976, the day of the team final. That night, she slept with her first – not her last – Olympic gold medal beneath her pillow.

For all her cuteness, Maria Filatova was a fearsome gymnast and competitor.  If the crowd were awed by the pyrotechnics of Romanian technician Nadia Comaneci, they were wooed by the charm and antics of showgirl Filatova.  Her slinky, graceful, yet humorous rendition of a schoolgirl femme fatale almost stole the show during podium training. Her gritty and alluring performances there persuaded the Soviet national coaches to prefer her to Lidia Gorbik during the team competition, and Filatova’s Olympic career had begun.

Remember, in 1976 gymnasts performed to the accompaniment of a single musical instrument – usually a piano.  Maria could not rely on volume or monobeat to give emphasis and expression to her floor routine – it had to come from her movements.  The following video has, sadly, been overdubbed with instrumental music – but you only have to watch Filatova. Mute the sound, and you can still appreciate the musicality that was a feature of all her performances.

Did you see that? As well as performing a routine that may comfortably have been seen in Paris’s Folies Bergeres, Maria Filatova, barely 15 years old, completed a double tuck somersault. She danced her way out of a twinkling double twisting somersault. Hardly the work of a cheeky schoolgirl. Filatova – a Master of Sport – was at the very top of her chosen profession at the age of 15, performing acrobatic skills of unprecedented difficulty. And not just on floor. Throughout her career, Filatova was amongst the first on the Soviet team to introduce new, super difficult elements to her work, at a time when the sport was taking consistent strides forward in technique and power.

Speak to Maria today, and she will tell you that finding her way onto the Soviet team was her greatest achievement. Look at the names of the gymnasts with whom she competed throughout her career – names like Tourischeva, Kim, Korbut, Davydova. Filatova, a young gymnast from a distant part of Russia, broke the mould when she joined the Soviet team, combining the lyrical tradition of the past with the developing acrobatic trend of the future. She came not from one of the established powerhouses of Soviet gymnastics, but from Siberia, an area with a developing reputation for excellence. Alongside her coach, Innokenty Mametyev, whom she still remembers fondly today and with whom she lived as family from the age of 11, she presented a style of gymnastics that was to set a new standard in World gymnastics.

Maria Filatova did not stand still after her meteoric rise to fame at the 1976 Olympics. During the years that followed she won no fewer than ten gold medals in all around competitions. In 1977 she became Soviet national champion, and in 1978 won the World Cup. Four times she won a gold medal as part of the winning Soviet team at World Championships or the Olympics. Her beam work was consistently amongst the best in the world, and still shines for its balance and smoothness. But it was on floor that Filatova shone brightest. Her transformation from the baby diva of 1976 to the graceful artiste of 1980 was marked by a limpid, emotive performance that still stops me in my tracks each time I see it. It must be one of the most memorable, moving routines ever.

Many people believe that Maria merited all around gold at her final competition, the 1981 World Championships. Having ‘set the table’ for the Soviet team, her qualification scores did not give her the same bonus as her rivals. I prefer, though, to think of Filatova the way she is described in the Russian Gymnastics Hall of Fame : ‘the strongest gymnast of the 1970s’.

Despite all her medals and achievements, the fondest memory Maria Filatova has of her career in gymnastics are the many friends she made across the world, and I am sure that there are even more than Maria might imagine. As part of the Soviet display team that visited so many different places around the world, she was a fantastic ambassador for her country. Maria was one of the first gymnasts I ever saw perform live (at the age of 16, in 1976 at Wembley), and one of the first Russians of my age I ever knew anything about. To many of us in the West, Russians were unblinking, silent old men with large, caterpillar-like eyebrows and black, shapeless great coats. Maria, with her mischievous smiling face and cheeky gestures, was more like one of us. These friendship displays opened my eyes to aspects of Russian culture and to the possibility of friendship with people from a country who might otherwise have remained foreign to me.

There is one other thing I remember in particular about Maria and, rather unusually, it is not directly about her gymnastics. Some time after the 1980 Olympics, Maria wrote (in Russian):

‘If there is divinity in this world, it is work, and the beauty of work.’

This seems quite mysterious to me, something I can barely understand. Yet it says something about Maria, her gymnastics, and the special feeling that she brings to her sport. A special feeling that seems to me to be Russian, through and through.

If Maria is not Russian, they will have to invent a special nationality for her.

http://rewritingrussiangymnastics.blogspot.com/2011/09/natalia-yurchenko-i-gtv-profile.html

I-G.tv has just launched a gallery of Soviet and Russian gymnasts with a profile of Natalia Yurchenko. This is the first in a regular series.  There are some beautiful pictures of Natalia today and in her competitive hey day, a preface by Vladimir Zaglada, and a table detailing most of Natalia’s major competitive achievements.

Vladimir has done a beautifully rendered Russian language translation for I-G.tv.  You can read a Google translation of it in English there if you wish, or view the original below.

Natalia Yurchenko: ‘a synthesis of risk and beauty’

Queen Elizabeth

I will always remember Natalia Yurchenko’s face.  Those brooding, dark eyes somehow expressed a whole rainbow of feeling that I could never put into words.  Yurchenko began her floor exercise that way; eyes cast down, head to one side.  The music animated her gymnastics, at one time emotional but never over-gestured.  Facially impassive and inscrutable, you could read the world in her gymnastics.

World All Around Champion in 1983, Yurchenko combined the lyricism of the 1970s with the adventure of the 1980s.  She personified the values of Risk, Originality, Virtuosity that were embraced by the Code of Points at the peak of her competitive career, but her ultra-difficult routines were performed in an almost painterly fashion.  1968 Olympian Larissa Petrik said it most concisely,

‘Yurchenko is the synthesis between risk and beauty of composition, between

tricks on the apparatus and expressive artistry’ (1984)

Yurchenko’s career spanned three generations of Soviet champions across the 1970s and the 1980s.  Her international career saw her mature alongside greats such as Nelli Kim, Maria Filatova and Elena Mukhina, flower during the early 1980s with Olga Bicherova and Olga Mostepanova, and lead youngsters Elena Shushunova, Oksana Omelianchik and Elena Shevchenko to their eventual triumphs at the 1985 World Championships and, beyond, the 1988 Olympics.   Her first competitive appearances took place at a time when the Soviet Union’s dominance of the sport was threatened by the revolutionary Romanians.  But by the time she retired the 1980s all but belonged to what had become her team.

Yurchenko, born in Norilsk, Siberia, on the 26th January 1965, was trained by Galina Khasanova through the early part of her career, but moved to the Dynamo Sports Society in Rostov-on-Don at the age of 12 to work with the legendary Vladislav Rastorotsky.   Rastorotsky became like family to the uprooted Yurchenko.   His bear-like physique and somewhat fearsome facial expression belied his philosophy of coaching,

People must be treated not only according to the rules, but also according to their soul’ (Tokarev, 1985)

He encouraged his gymnasts to take an active interest in literature and art, accompanying them on visits to art galleries, and welcoming them into his home where they could enjoy his personal library of several thousand books and a warming cup of tea (Shakhin, 1984).

Rastorotsky, formerly coach to Olympic Champions Ludmilla Tourisheva and Natalia Shaposhnikova, taught Yurchenko that

‘Elements must be executed!  They must be drawn like a picture!  You must seek to draw brilliantly, like an artist’ (ibid)

Yurchenko followed her mentor’s advice closely; the silky quality of her movement often gave the impression that she was working in slow motion, and her performances had an emotional depth that went beyond mere entertainment.  She was the epitome of artistry, but is remembered most frequently for her technical innovations: the revolutionary vault which she created with Rastorotsky, as well as her never-to-be repeated, heart-stopping bars combination of Tkachev to Delchev and her Yurchenko loop across the beam.

A quiet gymnast who never sought publicity, Yurchenko is often forgotten in the story of 1980s gymnastics, despite her pervasive influence.  She was a member of the Soviet team for eight years at a time when leading gymnasts often competed for less than four.   The vagaries of world politics meant that Yurchenko never had the chance to compete at an Olympic Games, yet her contribution to gymnastics was truly Olympian.

Married to footballer Igor Sklyarov, Yurchenko has one daughter, Olga.  The family has just (August 2011) returned to Russia where they will pursue a new life after more than ten years living in the USA.

Queen Elizabeth».

How fast time goes by, but this is a time when Retirement Article written by my Real Friend Mr. Gary Goodson Sr. found  the place which he deserved .

“TEACHING COACHES & COACHING THEIR GYMNASTS”

Many Thanks For Your Help, P.U.H.S. Gymnastic Teammate Gary

Most of my professional life has been “TEACHING COACHES & COACHING THEIR GYMNASTS” – Gary Goodson Sr. Gymnast, Teacher & Professor, Coach & Judge – Fifty-Year Anniversary 1956-2006 INTRODUCTION: This “Thank You To The Gymnastic Coaches & Their Gymnasts” retirement and history letter also serves as a personal service record to the great sport of gymnastics and to the gymnastic associations and federation administrators that I had the pleasure to serve…

HISTORY: While I am expecting to enjoy my new life as a retiree in 2007, my years of coaching gymnastics represent the lifelong dream of a very young boy living in the small town of Porterville, California located in the southern San Joaquin Valley. I always knew I wanted to be a physical education teacher and coach; beginning in 1956 my lifelong intense, addictive interest, and love of the unique sport of gymnastics began. Thanks to my first and only gymnastic coach, Mr. Jim Stewart at Porterville Union High School in Porterville, California. Coach Stewart was a former gymnast himself and was a great history teacher at P.U.H.S. too. I believe Porterville had the first high school gymnastic program in the San Joaquin Valley that year of 1956 a half century ago…thank you Coach Jim Stewart wherever you are? My lifelong “learning journey” of striving for excellence in learning and teaching and coaching gymnastics is coming to a choice conclusion, my 50th year in the sport. My retiring from the national and international gymnastic coaching scene reminds me of an old Chinese proverb which states that “when you work at something you enjoy; that you never work a day in your life.” Perhaps my chosen teaching and coaching career wasn’t work at all, but a blessing for which I will always be thankful. Looking back, I definitely enjoyed my life working with gifted athletes in several sports, but especially so with the many gifted gymnasts and, in most cases, with their equally gifted and dedicated “student of the science” gymnastic coaches.

After obtaining both my B.S. Degree from the University of Oregon in 1963 and M.S. Degree in 1967, I served the sport of gymnastics as a: ∙ Men’s South Salem & Klamath Falls High School Coach – 45-15 win/loss ∙ University of Oregon Frosh Men’s Coach – Undefeated ∙ Oregon College of Education/Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Oregon – Men’s and Women’s Head Coach – 1969-1973 with a combined 74-25 win/loss record, Undefeated D.G.W.S. Women’s Teams & N.A.I.A. Men’s Teams 1972 & 1973. ∙ Director and Men’s & Women’s Head Coach – Portland Gymnastic Center – 1973-1974. Qualified four gymnasts to U.S.G.F. Jr. & Sr. Nationals ∙ National U.S.G.F. Men’s Judge ∙ Women’s Technical Director & Provincial Coach – Ontario Gymnastic Federation – 1974-1979 ∙ Women’s Technical Director & Jr. Elite National Coach – United States Association of independent Gymnastic Clubs – 1980-1993 ∙ Director & National Coach – National Open Gymnastic Program – 1993- 2006 ∙ Clinician at N.A.W.G.J. Congresses for elite element training for our U.S. women gymnastic judges. ∙ Head gymnastic clinician in every state in the United States, every province in Canada, 1974-2006 ∙ Coach for gymnasts and their coaches from every gymnastic focused country of Central and South America at Lider Gymnastic Club in San Jose, Costa Rica – 2000-2006 – Sonia (Vargus) Madrigal ∙ Master clinician for elite level gymnastic clinics and courses in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Northern Italy and Costa Rica.

Consultant working with Dr. Ed Enos and his Association For International Cultural Exchange Programs at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada; initiated six elite level gymnastic training camps with the U.S.S.R. & three with The Peoples Republic of China gymnastic federations. ∙ Canadian & American A.I.C.E.P.Technical Director of Gymnastics for Dr. Enos, organizing and taking gymnastic groups of U.S. & Canadian coaches, gymnasts and parents behind the Iron Curtain and Bamboo curtain in the 1980 & 1990’s.

Thanks to the Canadian A,I,C.E.P. Cultural and Sport program of Dr. Ed Enos; to the U.S.S.R. The “Profile Gymnastic Development System” was obtained and then re-written by myself so as to adapt to the United States gymnastic sport training lifestyle. This Junior Elite Development Program “Profile System” was then instituted in 1980 as the first junior elite national development team testing and selection system in the United States gymnastic history; through the professional efforts of Ed Knepper then President of the U.S.G.F. and the U.S.A.I.G.C. Thank You to both Ed Enos of Montreal, Canada & Ed Knepper of Wilmington, Delaware.

THANK YOU ALL! RETIREMENT WISHES FROM GYMNASTIC COACHES & ADMINISTRATORS Retirement wishes from fellow United States, Canadian and Russian gymnastic coaches and colleagues:

From: Coach Steve Nunno – Olympian Shannon Miller & Claudia Miller: Dear Gary, First of all, please accept my sincere apology for not replying sooner. I realize that you have a schedule set for your article and I hope I didn’t miss your deadline. I have been covered up in paperwork for the past two weeks and before that we had our best season in history going so I had to keep my nose to the grindstone. I know if anyone understands, it would be you, Gary. Secondly, let’s get this straight. A coach never retires. You simply move on to another phase in your life. I’m certain that with your work ethic you would not be able to just hang out and “enjoy life”. Your life revolves around the sport of gymnastics and the wonderful people you have met and assisted. Please know that I truly appreciate everything you did for me when I was an up and coming coach. Gary, you truly helped me get involved in the coaching business. Through your association with USAIGC and your efforts as elite development director, I was provided an avenue that put coaches and coaches’ education first. You personally encouraged me to continue pursuing a coaching career and showed me a path to follow that proved to be very successful for me. Your persistence and work ethic provided the cornerstone from which many of us built a strong foundation upon. I want to sincerely thank you for not only the personal assistance you gave me throughout my career but also the lifetime of dedication you have given to the sport of gymnastics. All the best to you in the next phase in your life. Godspeed my good friend. Steve A. Nunno

From: Shannon Miller – Olympian Gary, I was only 8 years old when Gary Goodson had the first major impact on my gymnastics career. I didn’t pass the first phase of the USAIGC strength and flexibility test, but Gary made me feel that I had potential; he gave me direction and encouragement, and soon I did pass both phases of this test and earned the opportunity to attend the training camps where Gary again had a significant influence on my future gymnastics career. The trip he helped organize to Moscow where the American and Canadian gymnasts had a chance to train with some of the Russian gymnasts and their coaches gave me the inspiration to train hard and dream big. Gary laid a great gymnastics foundation for me, one on which I continued to build as I moved into the Elite arena. Gary has been such a wonderful influence on so many gymnasts all over the world and I wish him all the best on a well-deserved retirement. Take care and congrats again. Shannon Miller

From: Claudia Miller – Mother- Gymnastic Coach – U.S.A.G. Gymnastic Judge Gary Goodson is definitely THE G MAN! His reputation as a Gymnastics expert certainly spans the globe. Thousands of little girl’s, my own included, can thank him for getting them started in the fantastic sport of gymnastics. Not only did a significant percent of his protégé’s go on to be excellent gymnastic competitors, but his coaching gave these students a sound foundation for almost any sport. Claudia Miller

From: Coach Kelli Hill – Olympian Dominique Dawes Gary – Thanks so much for getting me started! The education and work ethic you instilled is still in use with me today (25 years later). The trip to Russia, the training camps, the strength and basic skill testing were my foundation to coaching. Dominique Dawes would not be who she is today without what the Junior Elite Development Program you gave us both. I’ll never forget – “you can’t stay up with the owls if you want to soar with the eagles”. Thanks for everything Gary. Happy retirement! Sincerely, Kelli B. Hill

From: Coach Mark Young – Olympian Amy Chow Gary, We became involved with Gary Goodson and the Elite Profile Testing and camps around 1990. I was very interested in improving my own coaching skills and thought that Gary was very knowledgeable and could become an asset to me and my athletes. The information I gleaned from Gary and those camps helped greatly. Amy Chow was a good gymnast from a very young age and was able to qualify to training camps. Being one our strongest athletes it sometimes was hard to set a high standard and know what it was going to take to be competitive. It was at camps that we were able to see how many great athletes were training. You would see the results of training when you went to a competition but not the process it took to get to those results. We were able to see how hard you had to work and how everybody was progressing in there skill development. The people involved with the program at that time were really getting the job done and helped us to raise our level of expectation. The Elite Profile testing and camps helped to produce some of our top athletes for many years. It was great help to me and our program. Thanks Gary! Mark Young

From: Coach Gary Warren – Olympian Mohini Bardwaj Gary, Thank you so much for your inspiration and information that guided me in the “early years’ of my gymnastics career. Your work with our athletes at Queen City Gymnastics was vital to the success of our team. The information you provided to us is information that I use to this day. I always acknowledge the work you did with our athletes in the lectures that I give today. I call myself a “Gary Goodson Disciple”. You showed us a system of “profile” elements and how to implement this system into our program. Also, you showed us the concept of “physical preparation” first and foremost. All of this was at a time where information such as this was difficult to come by. Gary, I truly appreciate what you did for me as a developing coach and your assistance with our athletes. I know that I would not be where I am today without your work and your sharing of this vital information. Gary Warren USA Gymnastics Women’s Program Director

From: Coach Steve Whitlock Gary Goodson, in association with Ed Knepper and others involved with the U.S.A.I.G.C. organization, developed and promoted a systematic program that included core strength and flexibility enhancement, skill training, testing, and a rewards/recognition system. Working with the U.S.A.I.G.C. — and as a roving clinician — Gary was instrumental in influencing coaching development in clubs throughout the U.S. In my early days as a coach and club owner, I utilized this program in conjunction with the developing USA Gymnastics competitive programs, and my own methodology to train and motivate the athletes and coaches involved in my program, the “Acronauts” in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. My thanks goes out to Gary for his hard work, enthusiasm, and willingness to share. Steve Whitlock USA Gymnastics

U.S.S.R. & Russia International Elite Coach & Mentor Dr. Vladimir Zaglada – Soviet National Coach & Dynamo Director – U.S.S.R. Dear Gary, Let me week to prepare information you REALLY DESERVE! I am not forget your first email! Of course, it will be the honor for me to write this paragraph: I saw (everybody saw!) one of the very first (not fast!) American Coach walking at the Gym, during the World Championships, at the Russian Streets, Museums, everywhere… in Cowboy Hat! No politics, no problem with communications, no problem…with Russian Food, include BORSCH and PELMENI . It was the only one language he used – GYMNASTICS! The only one philosophy he shared – Friendship! What else he gave to the Russian Coaches, Gymnasts and to the all people he met on the Moscow Streets: warm from the bottom of his heart, his natural intelligent soul and high level of education, American Spirit called “You can do it!” and more and more and more! He was a Good Student and he still is a Good Student! Retirement is not acceptable for him. It is no way for him to go fishing only and stay lazy by Lazy River. He will always find a fast stream and some interesting (sometimes even dangerous) things to deal with (even during the fishing)! Just an example how strong he is: many years ago I used a 3D Doll in order to create ULTRA-C Elements. We did it with Yuri Gaverdovski. So, the first Gymnastics Animation (it was Reverse Hecht Release performed on high bar and known later as a Tkachev Release and Gennadi Yakunin Dismount) belongs to Yuri Gaverdovski and V. Zaglada (1969-70).

I don’t know why we gave to our Doll an American name “John”. But it was a good idea developed later by Gary Goodson. The only one person in the World – Gary Goodson Sr. organized a huge distribution ship for the VIC Doll in the USA. His Dolls not 3D, but they are GREAT for: the Imagination of skills, Coaching, learning, corrections and more and more and more. Another Great Russian’s idea was developed by Gary Goodson: PROFILE System! More, more, more… I will write about you my Friend. You deserve it!!! Vladimir Zaglada, your FRIEND Past Deputy Chief – Department of Gymnastics Moscow Institute of Physical Culture Past President of Moscow Dynamo Gymnastic Club Moscow, U.S.S.R./Russia United States & Canada Gymnastic Administrators:

From: Ed Knepper – Past President of U.S.G.F. & U.S.A.I.G.C. Gary, Congratulations on your recent retirement from gymnastics and an illustrious career. Your achievements were truly miraculous and were the forerunner to all developmental gymnastics for women in the United States. The Independent Gymnastic Clubs were blessed with your technical guidance here in the United States which led them to the development of a system that would prove to commit our gymnasts to world wide dominance. Although USA Gymnastics didn’t give you credit for all that you did to implant a training and technical system, they have taken your hard work and adopted it as their own with great success. The Independent Clubs enjoyed and learned from your expertise not only in our country at the many national clinics and seminars but they were also privileged to train with you and under your leadership in many foreign countries. These experiences were invaluable to the athletes, their parents and their coaches. Yes Gary, your presence will be sorely missed on the national and international scene in the development of gymnastics technique and training systems. Your career has made an indelible mark on gymnastics in the U.S. forever. We wish you only the very best in your retirement. It has been a pleasure working with you and knowing you over these many years. Good luck in retirement, Ed Knepper Past President U.S.G.F. & U.S.A.I.G.C.

From: Slava Corn – Past President Ontario Gymnastic Federation, Past President Canadian Gymnastic Federation. Gary Goodson was the first Technical Director hired for the Women’s Program in Ontario and stayed with us for 5 years. He set a high technical standard for future development. No one can challenge Gary’s technical expertise but it was his presentation style and his exuberance that made him known and remembered in the gymnastics community. Gary cares deeply about the sport of gymnastics and has committed his life to coaches’ education and athlete development. He will be missed on the gymnastics scene as a professional, but I’m sure he will remain involved as a friend and supporter of the sport. Slava Corn – F.I.G. Women’s Vice President Director of Sport and Recreation Seneca College, Toronto, Canada

CONCLUSION: As a gymnastic professional in nearly every aspect of the Olympic sport of Artistic Gymnastics, for both the United States and Canada, since 1974 to the present, I do appreciate the fact that not only did these two great national gymnastic communities allow me the opportunity to study my professional craft throughout the world then teach and coach, but in doing so I got a chance to travel the world. Priceless! My sincere thank you to the thousands of Artistic gymnasts and to the hundreds of their very talented and dedicated coaches around the globe- by their act of asking me to serve as one of their mentors I got the opportunity to know them…

Thank You! Gymnastically Yours, Gary Ray Goodson Sr. Gymnast, Teacher & National & International Gymnastic Coach, University of Oregon/University of Western Oregon Assoc. Professor & Coach & National Rated U.S.G.F. Men’s Gymnastic Judge 1956-2006.

VLADIMIR ZAGLADA: For sure is so impressive to read this very sensire letter of retirement!  I am very surprised why such a strong and favorable for the USA Gymnastics Professional  don’t deserved to be mentioned in the Hall of Fame IG and  why USA Gymnastics don’t considered him as one of the  Founders!?

My Friend & Partner Coach Gary Goodson still looks awesome! Just watch the photo where he is skiing on the top of the hills in Colorado, 2020:

Guinness, but not Bloody Mary!

AMERICAN CIVIL WAR AS A PART OF  THE LIFE OF GARY GOODSON

The four books written by Gary Goodson Sr. were published in the USA and got highest awards from Civil War History Society. I was so happy to read about American Civil War, because the History of Russian Civil War had so many very controversial facts, lies and rumors written not by real Russian compatriots, but by the people, which would like to confuse our youngest generations, never got a real smell of the War and never saw the real danger and ruins of the Real War!

After reading that I decided to create a very special award for my Friend & Partner, Mr. Gary Ray Goodson Sr. which acknowledged his achievements in History of the American Civil War besides his incredible input into the Development of the USA Gymnastics and his leading position as an Ambassador in the area of the strengthening the Friendship better USSR / Russia and United States.

The official badge and Diploma of the Acknowledgement of the Achivements of Mr. Gary Ray Goodson, Sr. will be issued by Vladimir Zaglada Hall of Fame shortly.

TRAVEL ON THE GARY’S MEMORY: “CHEVROLET – CORVETTE – 1959″ &  MORE…

Travel to the History

I am inviting my Friend, Gary Goodson for the interesting travel ! It will be a real fun to get his answers on my not very simple questions.

QUESTION: Why this Handkerchief is so important for you as part of your Russian collection?

This World War II Memorial handkerchief was a gift, given to me by a complete stranger on my very first trip of nine trips to U.S.S.R/Russia in the late 1970’s. It was given to me from a very old Moscow woman citizen that just walked up to me on the streets of Moscow and politely just handed me this beautiful hand knit handkerchief that is complete with the sewn WW-II Allies national flag symbols of U.S.S.R./Russia, United States of America, United Kingdom and France! Knowing virtually no Russian language except thank you, I spoke to this very old Moscow, Russian lady, thank you, thank you over and over!

QUESTION: What is the name of this Russian Church and is it picture on the unique Russian  lacquer Box

ANSWER: The Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, Fedoskino lacquer box; commonly known as Saint Basil’s Cathedral, is an Orthodox Church in Red Square of Moscow. Officially known as the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat, or Pokrovsky Cathedral, that was constructed from 1555 to 1561 on orders from Ivan the Terrible and commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan. This absolutely beautiful, with use of gold and silver paint, Fedoskino #566, 10 1/2 x7 1/2″ lacquer box was hand painted and signed by Dysosukdb in 1980; was purchased by myself while in Moscow, U.S.S.R.
QUESTION: What about CHEVROLET- CORVETTE, 1959″ !?  I am talking about this great car, produced by American Company which I never even touched the steering wheel, never being inside. I had just an opportunity to watch the photos of this Revolutionary Car in the “America” Magazine, published in the USSR in the beginning of 1960s.
ANSWER: This is the best car I ever had! It is well-known fact that just 5000 this rare cars exists in the World! Well done, my Friend & Partner! We are finishing today your Retirement Article which was addressed to your former students, partners, great gymnasts, Olympic and World Champions and to me and my Hero , great Gymnastics Expert from Animal Kingdom, Gymmy the Owl !
